Upscaling artwork for printing: more pixels is not more detail
Enlarging a file is the most requested rescue and the most misunderstood one. The operation multiplies pixels, and pixels are what a press consumes, so the output looks like a solution. What it does not do is recover detail the original never recorded — and the decision about whether a file can be printed at a given width is made on that detail, not on the pixel count.

Why the measurement is taken on the original
Effective detail is a property of the source. An upscaler interpolates between the pixels it was given, so every new pixel is a function of its neighbours rather than a new observation. Measuring the enlarged file would report the interpolation as if it were information, which is exactly the mistake the operation invites.
The cases where upscaling earns its place
It is a finishing step, not a rescue. Applied to a file that already clears the threshold, it can smooth the resampling the press would otherwise do itself.
- The source already has enough detail for the width
- The output needs specific pixel dimensions for a layout or a gang sheet
- The artwork is flat-colour and hard-edged, where interpolation has little to invent
What a generative upscale changes about the risk
A model that reconstructs plausible detail is inventing content, and invention is exactly what a print file must not contain. A reconstructed serif or a re-imagined logo edge may be convincing and still be wrong, and it will be wrong on every garment in the run.

- Does the effective resolution figure change after upscaling?
- Not in any way that matters. The number is derived from the detail present in the original, so it stays where it was while the file gets larger.
- Then why offer upscaling at all?
- Because some files clear the threshold and still need different pixel dimensions. That is a formatting need, and it is honest to meet it.
- What should be sent to the customer instead?
- A request for the original, named by what it is: the file the design was made in, or the vector, or an export at a larger width from the same source.
