How large should this design be on a shirt?
Two questions travel together and are usually answered separately. One is arithmetic on your file: at the width you have in mind, what height comes out and what resolution does each axis land on. The other is geometry: does that rectangle sit inside the area you actually have to print into. This runs both, and the second one only when you supply the area, because that number belongs to your press and your blank rather than to this page.

Where the available print area comes from
This page will not tell you that a particular garment size takes a particular number of centimetres, because that number is not one number. It moves with the manufacturer, with the platen loaded on the press and with the decoration method, and publishing a single figure for it would dress a guess up as a measurement. Look it up once for the blanks you actually run, then type it in.

- The blank supplier's spec sheet, which lists a printable area per style and per size
- Your own house standard, if the shop has settled on one width for a placement
- Leave both fields empty and everything except the fit question still answers
A design can fit and still leave most of the area empty
Fitting is not the same as filling. A long banner-shaped piece dropped into a tall rectangle touches the side edges immediately and stops; the height above and below it can never be used without changing the artwork itself. Both of its dimensions pass the test individually, the rectangle sits inside the area, and the result still looks small on the blank. The proportion figure on this page is there to make that visible before the film is printed.

Reducing the size moves the resolution the other way
Every measurement here is a division, so the direction is fixed rather than a matter of opinion: the same pixels spread over less width land on a higher figure per inch. That is why the largest fitting size is reported with its own resolution beside it. A file that reads thin at the width you asked for can read comfortably at the width the area allows, and no repair, upscale or re-export is involved in getting there.

The same two questions, whatever puts the ink down
Transfer film, direct-to-garment, screen and vinyl each have their own physical limits, and those limits are properties of the process and the shop rather than of your file. What every one of them shares is the pair of questions above: how large the artwork becomes at the width requested, and whether that rectangle survives contact with the area available. Settle those first, because they cost nothing and they rule out the sizes that were never going to work.

FAQ
- What should I type into the print area fields?
- Whatever bounds your job in practice. On a press that is usually the platen dimensions; for a specific blank it is the printable area from the supplier's spec sheet. If you are ordering from a shop, ask them for the two numbers — they have them, and they would rather send them than reprint.
- Why will it not just tell me the size for a medium shirt?
- Because a single answer for that does not exist. Two mediums from different manufacturers differ, the same blank differs by decoration method, and a shop with a smaller platen is bound by the platen rather than by the shirt. Anything printed here would be an invention, so the field stays yours to fill.
- It says the design fits but only uses a third of the area. Have I done something wrong?
- No, that is the shape of your artwork meeting the shape of your area. The only ways to close the gap are to redraw the piece nearer the proportion of the area, to accept the unused space as part of the placement, or to choose a different area. Enlarging past the fit would push the design over an edge.
- Does printing it smaller repair a low-resolution file?
- It raises the figure per inch, which is a real improvement in what the printed piece resolves, but it adds nothing to the file. The detail present is the detail you started with. When the required pixel counts sit far above what you have, a better source file is the change worth chasing rather than a smaller placement.
