Two answers, not one
Asking 'how big can I print this' has a strict answer and a practical one. The strict answer is the width at which the file still carries every pixel it captured — that is the covered width shown here. The practical answer is wider, because most printing is not examined with a loupe, and the calculator shows you what you are trading as you go past it.
Where the arithmetic stops and the method starts
The same file behaves differently depending on what it is printed on and how it is printed. Ink spreading into fabric hides softness that gloss paper would show. A transfer pressed onto a hoodie is seen from a metre away; a label on a jar is read at thirty centimetres.

Reading the result honestly
The bands here describe what you should expect to see, not a verdict on the file. SafeWidth does not print 'print-ready' next to a number, because that claim belongs to the press and the person standing at it. What the calculator gives you is the measurement to make that call with — and if the number disappoints, the useful next question is whether a smaller print serves the job.
FAQ
- Why does the covered width use 300 rather than 200?
- 300 DPI at final size is the working target for artwork seen close up, so it is the honest definition of 'no detail lost'. The engine's own decision changes at 200, which is a different question: what can still be delivered rather than what is untouched.
- Can I go wider than the covered width?
- Often, yes. That is the point of showing the effective resolution as well: it tells you how far past full detail you are, so the decision is informed rather than hopeful.
- Does the height matter?
- For a proportional print, the width settles it — both edges scale together. If you are fitting a fixed frame where the proportions differ, check both edges with the DPI checker instead.
