A customer sent a blurry logo for a DTF transfer

Blur is missing detail, and enlarging a file does not put detail back. The only useful question is how wide this file can be printed before the blur becomes visible on fabric — and that is a number you can calculate before you press anything.

Work out the safe width before you decide anything

Divide the pixel width of the artwork by the DPI you print at. That gives the width the file supports without inventing detail. Everything wider than that is a decision to accept visible softness, not a technical fix.

  • 1200 px at 300 DPI = 4 in / 10 cm
  • 2400 px at 300 DPI = 8 in / 20 cm
  • 3300 px at 300 DPI = 11 in / 28 cm — a full A4-width transfer

When upscaling helps and when it does not

Model-based upscaling can rebuild plausible edges on illustrations and photographs. On a logo with text it is a risk: the model redraws letterforms, and a redrawn letter is a wrong letter on every shirt in the run. Text is the line where enlargement stops being a repair.

  • Illustration or photo, no text: upscaling is usually worth trying
  • Logo with a wordmark: verify the text after the operation, or keep the original
  • JPEG artefacts around the edges: clean the edges first, enlarge second

What to ask the customer for

The file that solves the problem almost always exists. Ask for the vector original — AI, EPS, PDF or SVG — from whoever designed the logo. Failing that, ask for the largest PNG they have, exported rather than screenshotted.

Can you sharpen a blurry logo for DTF?
Sharpening raises local contrast at edges; it does not restore detail that is not in the file. It can make a soft logo look acceptable at a smaller print width, and it makes JPEG artefacts more visible at a larger one.
What DPI does DTF actually need?
300 DPI at the final print size is the working target. Textile hides more softness than paper, so 200-300 DPI is often accepted; below 150 DPI the softness is visible on the garment.
Is it better to print smaller?
Often yes. A logo printed at 8 cm from a file that supports 8 cm looks correct. The same file forced to 25 cm looks like a mistake the shop made, even though the artwork caused it.
